Imagine you've sent a message in a bottle from a desolate or dangerous location. The note is probably simple: “I need food.” “I am stranded.” “Someone is trying to hurt me.” For centuries these messages have gone unheard, but now, at the millennium, we are on the cusp of a global consciousness that could connect these disparate ends. I want to become the bottle that gets the message across.

My role model is Sergio de Mello. He was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights who died in the first major suicide bombing after the United States invaded Iraq. He was considered the only man who could bridge communication between George Bush, the Shiites, and the Sunnis. Another bottle gone.

Yet the messages aren't lost. This year I'm getting my masters in International Relations with a specialization in media and culture. At this point, I'm familiar with the ignorance and bureaucracy that keeps people apart, and yet I believe these disparities can be reconciled. They come in the form of poverty, oppression, and atrocious conflict. We've seen the results. I want to spend my year listening to voices from these desolate places, writing down the messages, and sending them out.
